Fountain of Youth overview

“Fountain of Youth” - Helpful Hints From Dr. Jo Ann Jones

Bad News:

  • You are not going to get your baby skin back
  • It is estimated that 80 - 85% of your total lifetime damage to your skin occurs by your 18th birthday. If you are over 18, both prevention and repair are needed.
  • The signs of aging of your skin are partly due to internal factors such as the genes you inherit and the length of time you have lived. There are limits to what you can do to reverse this damage

Good News

  • The other factors in aging skin are both internal and external. You can do something about these factors. New, effective treatments are available to achieve beautiful skin.  Important too is the old adage: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Good skin care habits, good dietary and lifestyle choices are essential for healthy, beautiful skin.

Guide to the "Fountain of Youth"
Lifestyle - Protection - Prevention - Skin Repair

Lifestyle – Good skin care habits start with simple, effective cleansing and adequate moisture balance.  Skin care products should be based on your unique skin type, any skin disorders and your amount of sun damage (photodamage). Make good dietary choices, have adequate water, fruits and vegetables.  Be cautious with fat and sugar. Wise choices provide anti-oxidants to protect the skin from the damaging effects of sun exposure, stress, smoking and environmental pollution.

Stress - Minimize the stress in your life. Control blood pressure.
Adequate sleep- Usually 6 - 8 hours each night.
Dietary- Aim for a well balanced diet, 6 - 8 glasses of water daily, antioxidants in diet or nutritional supplement and 25 grams of fiber daily.  Add nutritional supplements with vitamins, minerals, herbs and enzymes for healthy skin.
Exercise - Aim for a total of 60 minutes of exercise daily.
Alcohol - Drink only in moderation or not at all.
Smoking - Smoking causes more wrinkling.  Studies suggest that tobacco smoke may cause over-production of enzymes that break down skin fibers and may prevent production of new fibers.  Those who smoke end up with more lines and wrinkles.  One study reported that when excessive sun exposure and smoking occurred together, there was a huge increase in the risk of severe wrinkling

Protection

Sun Protection – For younger looking skin, avoid sun damage. Anti-aging skin care should start in early years with sun protection: appropriate clothing and daily sunscreen.   If you do not actively protect your skin from the sun, you are mostly wasting your time and money on any other anti-aging products or treatments.  Sun damage is the leading cause of “old skin.”  Don’t believe it?  Compare an area of your skin that is not tanned on a regular basis such as your breast to an area that is tanned such as your face.  Remember: there is NO such thing as a “healthy tan.”
- Wear a sunscreen daily with SPF 30 with both UVA and UVB coverage.
- Do not sunbathe or tan at tanning salons.
- Avoid sun as much as possible especially between 10 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Environmental Protection – Exposure to environmental chemicals may cause free radicals which are unstable molecules capable of causing a domino-effect of self-destruction.  Exposure to environmental irritants such as skin products too harsh for your skin may also age your skin.

Prevention

Sun Protection as above.
AHA - alpha-hydroxy acids. PHA - Poly-hydroxy acids for fine lines, improved radiance and clarity
Anti-oxidants in your skin care products.  Look for natural, powerful super-antioxidants such as coffee berry extract found in RevaleSkin Care (available in our office and online via www.SpiritSkinandBody.com)

Repair

Protection and Prevention as above
Skin damage analysis - detailed analysis of your skin to assess sun damage and problem skin.  This is the basis for developing a customized regimen to address your specific skin care needs with planning for corrective care which may include using your current skin care products in a more efficient, effective regimen, adding prescriptions for therapeutic topical or oral medications and using a selected cosmetic procedure or a combination of cosmetic procedures to target your skin needs.

Repair - Therapeutic skin care

Retinoids
Topical retinoids are synthetic vitamin A derived products such as Retin A, Renova and Tazorac. These prescription products can decrease discoloration, wrinkling, freckling. They should not be used during pregnancy or if breastfeeding. Topical retinoids should be stopped prior to and for a period of time after certain cosmetic procedures

NIA24 – a cosmeceutical skincare line based on niacin (vitamin B3).  NIA 24 is ideal for individuals wanting to counteract the effects of aging, sun damage, hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and improve overall skin tone, texture and fine lines, using products that are fragrance, color and dye-free, non-comedogenic (should not trigger or worsen acne) and allergy-tested.  NIA24 stimulates the skin’s own natural repair processes (DNA repair, improved cellular energy, building the skin barrier and hyperpigmentation reduction) to generate healthier skin cells throughout.

RevaleSkin System offers anti-aging skin care products exclusively formulated with the powerful, natural super-antioxidant ingredient CoffeeBerry  extract.  CoffeeBerry extract is derived from the fruit of the coffee plant and  has one of the highest antioxidant scores ever recorded and can help your skin look smoother and younger.  CoffeeBerry  extract is exceptionally rich in polyphenol antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid, condensed proanthocyanidins, quinic acid and ferulic acid.  Polyphenol antioxidants help to fight free radical molecules that cause cell damage and result in processes that lead to signs of aging.  Applying a topical antioxidant daily can  protect against the sun’s harmful UV radiation and slow the outward signs of premature skin aging, improve appearance of tone, texture, fine lines and wrinkles.

Repair – In-office Procedures

Silk Peel Dermalinfusion. Dermal infusion is more than  microdermabrasion
Silk Peel is use of a refined diamond tip to gently exfoliate the skin's dead outer layers combined with the infusion of topical solutions specific to the patient’s skin condition to treat skin imperfections such as acne, blemishes and pigmentation. The procedure is noninvasive, painless and lasts about 20 minutes with usual recommendation for 4 - 6 treatments.  Most common areas treated include face, neck and chest. Effects include rejuvenation of sun damaged skin, extraction of blackheads and whiteheads, reduction of acne, fine lines and enlarged pores.
